Problem

Dogs are man’s best friend, always at your side ready to obey your commands, dig holes, dribble, run about and bark loudly. But of course for every positive aspect there can be negative ones. The chewing of brand new furniture, the smells and the production of faeces and urine, which can lead to stains and damage of floors, carpets and gardens. Faeces, because they are generally solid are far easier to remove but urine can present many more problems.

Causes

A large puddle on the floor may mean that a dog just needed to pee and couldn’t hold on any longer. Smaller amounts of urine are probably indicative of territory marking. Marking indoors is usually performed on vertical surfaces such as door jams or maybe chair or table legs. This type of urine has a higher concentration of nitrogen and is deliberately ‘whiffy’ to signal its presence and status. Marking is a deliberate act and should not be seen as a potty training issue.

Cleaning

When a stain is found early action is essential to prevent damage and odours. If a carpet is soiled, initial mopping up with paper towels should be followed with a thorough wetting with water and further sponging with towels. Next, scrub with a carpet cleaner then spray the area with an odour eliminator from a pet store to remove lingering smells. For wooden surfaces extra care must be taken to dry the surface thoroughly after cleaning. Finally an enzyme inhibitor should be wiped over the area on a rag.

Prevention

Prevention is always preferable and saves a lot of ‘dirty work’. Assuming that a puppy has been well potty trained, speying or neutering at an early age will usually prevent marking in the house. Even neutering an older dog will have some benefit. Dietary modification can lessen the concentration of nitrates that cause damage and odour. More water, especially with dry food, will help. Tomato juice, also a popular home remedy can be used instead of water. Always consult a vet before taking changing your pet’s diet.

Further Help

If the problem is persistent and doggie still insists on showing you who’s boss, then there are a few measures which will help you as well as embarrassing a dog with attitude. For the older dog there are Belly Bands to wrap around a male’s body and penis, preventing urine from escaping. Essentially a dog nappy. In a similar vein but for puppies, there are Piddle Pads, which contain antibacterial ingredients to prevent odour. Enjoy a dog urine stain free life!
