Toy dogs are a type of small dog breed. These types of dogs are the smallest dogs available. Costs for small dog breeds tend to be less because of their size; they eat less, get tired faster and leave less mess. So you don’t have to buy as much food, spend less time exercising them etc.

Small dogs originate from ancient lap dogs, small versions of work dogs, hunting dogs, or dogs that may have been breed down for convenience. In olden times small dogs were a sign of affluence and used to attract fleas away from their owners. Placing certain breeds of dogs in the toy category stems from competition and tradition.

The Shih Tzu and Chihuahua dogs are exclusive to the small dog breed. There are dogs that have been breed from their larger counterparts and are just smaller versions like the Toy Poodle and Miniature Dachshund. Small breeds make great pets as they have limitless energy and are well suited for less active individuals and smaller living areas. They also tend to eat less than larger dogs and generally have less mess and shedding due to their size.

These breed are also 0065cellent watch dogs because despite their size they have piercing barks. They are very alert and will report any unusual behaviour, like a burglar by barking incessantly. Most small breeds are also easily trained, though a few breeds may take longer due to the stubborn nature of the breed.

Most small breeds are very healthy but due to their size have a few health issues you need to be aware off. The most relevant is the tendency to break bones due to their size. However if you get a healthy dog from a reliable breeder and maintain its health then you shouldn’t have any problems.
